Alleghany County is a small, rural, farming community that lies in the Blue Ridge mountains in the upper northwestern part of North Carolina. Alleghany covers 237 sq mi and encompasses the majestic Blue Ridge Parkway and scenic New River, with an average temperature of 52F. The 2016 US Census indicates that of a population of 10,848, 22.9% live in poverty, with an unemployment rate of 5.7%, and a median household income of $36,968. Services not offered in Alleghany at this time include transitional housing, homeless shelter, multiple forms of public transportation, or 2nd shift child care facilities. Alleghany provides three small PreK-8 schools and one centralized high school that operates August-June. NC Report Cards indicates class sizes range from 14-22 and are operated by highly qualified teachers.
